Jost Kobusch: Choosing the Hardest Line

Jost Kobusch is a German alpinist defined by a rare commitment: climbing alone, in winter, without supplemental oxygen, on some of the world’s most demanding mountains.

His long-term focus is Everest’s West Ridge—a route where isolation, wind, and exposure turn every metre into a decision.

A Different Approach to Everest

For Jost, the mountain is not a stage for quick victories. It is a place to test preparation, patience, and self-reliance.

While many Everest expeditions take place in the busy spring season, supported by fixed ropes and large teams, Jost deliberately chooses the coldest and quietest time of year. His approach is lightweight, self-sufficient, and rooted in alpine style.

A Project Built Over Seasons

Jost’s Everest project began with exploration, not a simple summit chase. During his first winter attempt in 2019/20, he reached the West Shoulder at approximately 7,366 metres. A later attempt was stopped by weather well below his target.

Every return has added valuable knowledge: of the terrain, changing conditions, and the limits that must be respected at high altitude.

Progress Without Compromise

In late December 2024, Jost climbed solo to 7,537 metres on Everest’s West Ridge, surpassing the 7,500-metre objective he had set for the expedition.

He left high camp for a single alpine-style push, then made the decision to descend safely rather than force the mountain to give more.

Judgement Above Ambition

That choice says as much about Jost as the altitude itself. Ambition matters—but judgement matters more.

In an environment where the weather can erase plans within minutes, success is not only about climbing higher. It is also about returning safely, learning from the experience, and preserving the opportunity to continue the project another day.

An Independent Spirit

Jost’s path has been shaped by the same independent spirit for years. At 21, he became the youngest person to solo Ama Dablam. In 2023, he completed a solo winter ascent of Denali via the Messner Couloir.

The Long View

Jost represents a different kind of explorer: focused, patient, and willing to pursue a goal over many seasons.

His story is not about conquering Everest. It is about committing to a line that demands total preparation, resilience, and self-reliance—then staying true to it, one careful step at a time.
